Little Dragons

Ages 4-7

The Little Dragon program is a program adapted from traditional World Tang Soo Do curriculum. The focus of the Little Dragon program is to have fun while gaining an appreciation for martial arts. Students also learn the appropriate behaviors and expectations for participating in a more formal martial arts class. The program is intended to serve as an introduction to traditional Tang Soo Do.

Ages

Prospective students may join at the ages of 4-7, and may participate in the program for up to three years before transitioning into our youth class. At the end of the program, if the student is able to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate for a beginner class and is able to pass the test for 8th gup (orange belt), they may graduate to the youth class. Additionally, students may test out at any time upon agreement of parents, student, and Chief Instructor.

Competition

Attending & participating in tournaments are great ways to meet other students & families in the world of Tang Soo Do. Students in the Little Dragon program who are registered with the World Tang Soo Do Association are eligible to compete at regional and world tournaments. Regional tournaments take place yearly during May and October. World Tournaments take place in July of even numbered years. Tournament divisions consist of hyung (forms), and dae ryun (sparring). Little Dragons practice flag sparring, not contact sparring. Competition is not mandatory for Little Dragons, however it is strongly encouraged!

Youth/Gup

Ages 7-15

The youth/gup program consists wholly of traditional World Tang Soo Do curriculum. Our youth classes teach and reinforce positive values in our students through strict guidelines in a fun, engaging environment. Students will learn teamwork, develop patience & an increased sense of responsibility, and will learn why it is important to have respect for themselves, and for others. Tang Soo Do aims to help students learn to focus, develop resilience, and to always perform their best.

Testing

Gup testing cycles are quarterly - meaning there are 4 gup tests every year with 3 month intervals between them. Not everyone tests every cycle. Reno United's philosophy on testing is that it will happen when it happens. All students learn at their own pace, so it's reasonable to only permit certain students to test for their next rank. Students who quality for rank testing will be notified in advance- students who do not qualify are still advised to run through the test in order to become accustomed to the test process.

Adult/Advanced

Ages 15+

The adult/advanced program consists of traditional World Tang Soo Do curriculum. Korean terminology is used frequently by the instructors and students in order to help promote the Korean heritage of the art. Students are taught various aspects of the art through instruction, lectures, games and repetition. Physical techniques are taught through repeated practice, demonstration, and explanation. In addition to terminology and physical technique, students learn about honor, obedience, respect, focus, self-control, brotherhood, confidence and humility. These traits help develop leadership skills within the community while we provide students with a friendly, welcoming environment.
